Viking drum Vegvisir is a unique instrument handcraft with care in Finnish Lapland. The deep sound will soothe your mind and relax your tense muscles. You can even scare away unwanted guests and spirits with its loud sound! It is perfect for playing, meditation and bring some Viking energy into your life.
Vegvisir a.k.a. the runic compass, Viking compass, Nordic compass was a symbol of protection and guiding for Vikings. It protected them from any danger during their travels, no matter where they were going. It is believed that the symbol was painted on the forehead. The eight spikes in the symbol were probably representing the points of the compass.
Being environmentally friendly and ethical, we source our materials locally from known and responsible suppliers. The frame is made of 7 mm double layered birch plywood which has been treated with wood wax. The drumhead is made of Finnish reindeer skin and the symbols have been added using silk printing. A wooden handle is attached to the back with strings.
A felted drumstick and instructions for caring for the drum are included.

A drum was probably one of the first instruments that was used all over the world, including in Scandinavia. Scientists believe that a Viking drum had a close resemblance to the shaman drums of the Sámi people. The process of drum making was probably similar where Viking craftsmen created a round, wooden hoop and over it, they stretched a drumhead made of animal skin. The drumhead was then decorated with paintings, symbols or other meaningful elements.
In the footsteps of ancient drum makers, we create our Viking drums using similar methods and decorating the drum with symbols that were important to the Vikings. The drum has a nice, deep and vibrating sound taking you back in time of myths and heroes.

Please note that our viking drum is great for playing but if the symbols are scratched or scraped deliberately, the might wear off.
How to care for your new drum
- use grease or some leather conditioner couple times a year
- keep the drum for example on the wall but not directly in the sunlight or near a heater (strong air conditioning can also dry the drum)
- don’t leave the drum in a hot car during the summer
- the drum doesn’t like dry air. The risk is that the drumhead becomes too tight causing it to rip (usually really cold weather equals dry air)
- instructions for caring for the drum are included in the package.
Tuning
The drum is very sensitive to the air humidity loosening it in a moist weather and tightening it in a dry weather. This affects the sound as well.
If your drum is too loose, you can dry it e.g. in the sunlight or with a hair dryer. If your drum is too tight, you can spray water on the skin or wipe it with the moist cloth. The drumhead doesn’t respond immediately so wait a couple of minutes.
Colouring/painting
The decoration on the drumhead has been made using silk printing. If you liked to add your own symbols or colour, you can use acrylic- or oil colours (please test first on a small area). Our drums are greased once the drumhead is attached, so that it does not rip. Therefore, it would be good to avoid painting straightaway after you have received the drum. If you have any concerns regarding painting the drum, please contact us.
The frame is made of birch plywood which is very suitable for carving your own symbols or adding some paint. You could also decorate your frame with different kind of talismans, feathers, pearls and other things of your liking.
Blessing the drum
Blessing a drum is an old tradition in which the energies of the drum and the owner merge and the drum becomes your own. Though, blessing is recommended, it is not necessary, you can still use the drum without doing it.

The adjustment mechanism of the drum makes it a reliable companion. Even in humid summer weather, you won't be caught out, as you can easily adjust the skin tension using the inner tube. This is a particularly handy feature when you need an "always-ready" drum for healing work or performances. The adjustment mechanism operates simply through a car tyre valve. Note! We use a car valve, which is easier to adjust. An ordinary bicycle pump won't work with this valve.
Nature and caring for it is very important to us, which is why we source the drum's materials primarily from local, responsible suppliers. The frame is bent from double birch plywood, which is treated with wood wax. The shamanic drum's skin is Finnish reindeer hide, either natural or dyed in stunning colours with water-based stain. The drum's handle is made from wood gathered from the forest, shaped to fit the hand comfortably and bound into a cross with cord. The handle provides an excellent playing grip on the drum.

N.B. An adjustable drum is a functional solution, but even it won't sound in extreme conditions. Also note that pumping air in—tightening/loosening—stretches the drum skin and over time diminishes the skin's playing qualities. Oiling keeps the skin supple. For long-term storage, it's worth releasing the air from the tube so it doesn't unnecessarily strain the skin.

The frame is covered with reindeer hide that needs to be soaked before attachment. You can dye the hide with powder stain (sold separately in our shop) or with plant-based dyes. A three-page illustrated colour guide is included.
