The reindeer is a symbol of Lapland’s sacredness, survival and gentle care. This unique power animal drum carries with it the story of the northern lights and the fell winds.

The artist Loviisa Etto has painted a delicate yet powerful landscape on the drum skin: in the embrace of the fells, in the glow of sunset, a reindeer mother nurtures her offspring. The image embodies the cycle of life, security and a mother’s love – whilst also reminding us of the sacredness of nature and its gifts.

The deep, resonant sound of the shamanic drum transports the player into a meditative state. It calms body and mind, and its rhythms support personal contemplation, healing work and communal rituals alike.

The drum is handcrafted in Lapland.

Frame: double birch plywood, waxed with natural wood wax.
Hide: domestic reindeer hide, blank base, illustrated by the artist.
Handle: made from forest-gathered wood, bound in a cross with strong cord.

A drum beater is always included in the price (the beater may differ from the one pictured in colour and shape). Printed care instructions are included with the drum.

The reindeer as a power animal

The reindeer is a northern survivor that has lived alongside humans for millennia on the fells, in forests and marshes. It carries with it peace, gentleness and forbearance – it doesn’t rush, but progresses steadily towards its destination.

How to care for your new drum

use grease or some leather conditioner couple times a year
keep the drum for example on the wall but not directly in the sunlight or near a heater (strong air conditioning can also dry the drum)
don’t leave the drum in a hot car during the summer
The drum doesn’t like dry air. The risk is that the drumhead becomes too tight causing it to rip (usually really cold weather equals dry air)

Tuning

The drum is very sensitive to the air humidity loosening it in a moist weather and tightening it in a dry weather. This affects the sound as well.

If your drum is too loose, you can dry it e.g. in the sunlight or with a hair dryer.

If your drum is too tight, you can spray water on the skin or wipe it with the moist cloth. The drumhead doesn’t respond immediately so wait a couple of minutes.

Drum skin is a “living” material that absorbs moisture from the air. Sometimes the drum skin is too loose, sometimes too tight. In normal room humidity (approximately 35-60%), the drum sounds normal and doesn’t require much tuning. However, as the indoor air becomes drier or more humid, the drum needs to be tuned to maintain its beautiful sound. Each drum is unique – whilst one may sound excellent in a room, another might merely produce a dull thud. A drum isn’t an “instant gratification” product, but may require attention and focus before each playing session.
In winter, the skin can become too tight and split if you don’t look after it. Conversely, excessive moisture doesn’t harm the skin; it will return to its proper form when the air dries.
Playing outdoors is possible for brief periods without a heat source. Depending on the season and humidity (late summer and autumn are the most challenging times due to high moisture levels), you’ll need a heat source for your drum, such as sunlight or a fire, to maintain proper tension.
Care instructions come with the drum. Overall, drum maintenance is straightforward, and the drum is a durable product!
Please note that each country has different climate and humidity levels, so we cannot guarantee the drum will sound as expected if it has absorbed too much moisture. Blessing the drum

Blessing a drum is an old tradition in which the energies of the drum and the owner merge and the drum becomes your own. Though, blessing is recommended, it is not necessary, you can still use the drum without doing it.
