Nature connection – why is it important to us?

People on top of a hill.

You and I are part of nature and Mother Earth. We are living and conscious beings – and so is Mother Earth. The natural elements: earth, water, fire and air vibrate deep in your body, and you are also one with the plants and animals. You may not be aware of this, or your original connection may have been lost.

Mother Earth keeps us grounded

Without contact with nature, you are like a leaf carried by the wind. You fly, you catch, you rise and you fall. You have no fixed point. You go where the wind blows.

You might notice this in your life in different ways. For instance, you are restless; you can have a hard time starting things or you rush into new things head on.

Thoughts may revolve around future worries or past sufferings. Depression and anxiety may also be partially caused by the lack of contact with nature. Different addictions gain the upper hand in you: you work or party too much. You may be addicted to alcohol, cell phones, drugs, shopping, etc.

How can we connect with nature?

Without contact with nature, your body is tense and stressed. Maybe you suffer from insomnia or sleep too much. The mind takes over and listening to your heart is difficult.

Mental balance is most easily found in nature, in the forest’s reeds and in the rays of the morning sun. It calms the restless mind and brings peace to your being. By rooting yourself in nature, digging your toes into the surface of Mother Earth, you bring yourself to this moment and find yourself again.

Nature is close by. Sit in the city park under a lush elm tree, climb a rock and watch the roaring sea, get up early in the morning to watch the sun rise and listen to the birds singing, or lay in the meadow and watch the clouds sail by. If movement causes difficulties, decorate your walls with pictures of nature, bring stones inside and hold them in your hand, take a mental trip to a place surrounded by nature, make crafts from natural materials or even buy a small fountain for the table.

Just 20 minutes of being in nature lowers your stress level and puts you in touch with Mother Earth.
